Government Grant to Train Employees for Small Businesses in British Columbia

Free money is always a good thing, especially when its a kick back of tax money from the government.  The BC government has developed a program for small businesses - less than 50 employees - to receive up to $5,000.00 in grant money for training their employees.  However, like with all government programs there are catches.   

1. You only get one kick at the can sorta speak.  Make sure you are utilizing the opportunity to the maximum.  You don't receive $5,000.00 for as much training as you want.  Small business owners receive up to $5,000.00 for ONE training program for their employees.  The maximum amount for any one employee is $1,500.00 so make sure you select a training program that is no more than $1,500.00 per employee.

2. Its to train employees only so make sure that when you are negotiating with the training company you as a small business owner receive a free seat in the program.  Most legitimate training companies will offer this option because you're the one controlling the purse strings and they are hoping for future training opportunities.

3. The training must be approved by the program before you take the training.  There are forms to fill out and red tape to go through, the good news.... turn over is approx 3-4 weeks.  Make sure you don't take the training expecting to then submit receipts to receive payment.

4. There is a limited amount of money and a limited amount of time to apply - which ever runs out first.  The good news is that you have 6 months after approval to register and complete the training.  So fill out the paperwork as soon as possible to avoid being disappointed.
