I'm torn, I gave up my career to stay home with my kids and feel that I could have been more of a person with a career. Although some men stay home with their kids and most kids are in Daycare, the bulk of one income families are women at home situations. Even when both work it is mostly the woman who takes sick days and finds positions that work around their family. They compromise their success at work because they are unable to put in the extra hours. They don't look for promotions because of the amount of extra time, responsibility and stress would take them away from their kids.
Those that give up work to stay home make the biggest sacrifice of all, or do they. They may end up lower on the corporate ladder and loose the stimulation that work provides but they gain so much too. They get to be with their children when it is most important. They don't have the stresses of a dual income family and they know how to do without. Their kids benefit from the extra attention, love, and time devoted to them. Their spouse benefits from the extra support and reduced demands on his time so he can focus on his career.
If a women chooses to work then she must demand from her spouse that he help out with children, home, and shopping. This can be hard to get if you work from home and your spouse doesn't value your work at home venture. However, the work at home mom and the work out of home mom need spousal support or both work and family will suffer. I know from experience and have ended up burnt out.
Working moms are busy women who are often stressed and need extra support from others to help take care of their kids and their homes. Their spouse needs to step up and take on more responsibility for the kids and the home. If a woman decides to stay home instead then their spouse needs to appreciate all that she is doing to support him and the kids instead of looking after her own career interests. Visa versa if the dad decides to stay home.
