Networking - Dos and Don'ts

I love to network and go to luncheons to meet new people. Most times though it turns into a dead end and waste of time. So often it is an expensive way to hopefully get a customer. So many times I hear referrals are the best way to get customers - and yes it is but if you don't provide a good reason for someone to refer someone it ends up being an expensive waste of time.

Have a GOOD compelling engaging 1 minute Infomercial and a concise intriguing 15 second elevator speech.

Practice these and make sure all the fat, unrelated, and superficial parts are cut out.

Make sure they both answer the question - How do you help your clients?

Dress Professionally and behave in a professional manner.

Do NOT wear Jeans.

Do ask others lots of questions and take their business cards.

Hand Out Your Business Card

Talk to people about finding ways to work together.

Don't ask flat out for referrals.

When you are at the event don't go with the goal of finding a customer.
Don't start talking about yourself and your company ignoring what others have to say.

If you do get a referral make sure you thank the person.

Don't just call and say thank you, send a card and a token gift. Make sure they know how much you appreciate the referral. A referral is valuable, make sure you acknowledge it at the same value.

Always refer back to those that refer you.

Go to networking events often and get involved in the running of the networking event - Volunteer your time. To get referrals via networking groups isn't cheap nor is it easy. It takes an investment of dollars, of your time, and giving your attention to others.
